After trying three other units, one of which a more basic PAC model SWI-CP2, without success; I found this VW specific unit RP4-VW11. I followed the simple instructions to the letter and voila! Aside from wire connections, the only thing to do is to set the number dial to your brand of head unit BEFORE CONNECTING it to your car. Alpine head unit powers up correctly and steering wheel controls function as they should. Done! Thanks PAC!
